Chicago Violence and Double Standards

I'm sure by now many have heard that recently a white young adult (18 yrs old) with special needs was held captive while 4 black young adults (also all 18) tortured and beat him on a live stream on Facebook. They did this while shouting things like "F*ck white people" as they laughed.

It's being covered by [some of] the main stream media here:

This incident as sick and perverse as it is shows just how much of a double standard exists in this country when it comes to dealing with crime and race.

To make the situation worse, the police keep "accidentally" referring to these 18 year old attackers as "kids". They aren't kids, at 18 you are an adult and more than old enough to be responsible for your own actions, so why are we trying to mitigate their actions?

Next, they aren't sure if hate crime charges should be filed, and not because it wasn't a racially based attack. In fact the reason they gave was because, as Cmdr. Kevin Duffin said, kids "make stupid decisions". Of course Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson played it down even further stating it was possible just "ranting about something they think might make a headline". Then you have the Chicago PD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi stressing that the investigation hasn't revealed a racial motive. Really? Are we looking at the same facts?

For a police department to downplay a situation like this sickens me. The very definition of a hate crime is a crime motivated by racial, sexual, or other prejudice, typically one involving violence. There's no question the victim was chosen based on his race, so instead we have to marginalize the accountability of the attackers.

If this had been reversed there would be no question as to having hate crime charges filed. Going further they aren't even sure if they are going to file kidnapping charges, but they're "considering" it. We also know if the roles were reversed we would see numerous protests in every major city in the U.S., the White House and the Federal Justice Department would already be involved both condemning the act and voicing their issues with the nations racial prejudice, and offering up their full support in seeking hate crime charges.

This was a sick act committed by people who should know better. Marginalizing any crime only lets others know that they will not have to worry about facing the consequences either!
